A traditional South African fermented milk product, similar to yogurt or cultured buttermilk, widely consumed across South Africa especially in Zulu and Xhosa communities. Made by allowing cow's milk to ferment naturally, amasi has a thick, sour taste and is eaten as a staple food, often with pap (maize porridge). It holds deep cultural significance in southern African culinary traditions. The word is Zulu/Xhosa in origin and is now used in general South African English as a well-understood loanword.
She grew up eating amasi with pap every morning, and still says nothing else hits the same.
