Used in South African English, auslander (also spelled uitlander) refers to a foreigner or outsider — someone not native to the country or region. The term was historically significant in late 19th-century South Africa, where Uitlanders (mostly British immigrants drawn to the Transvaal gold fields) were denied voting rights by the Boer government, a grievance that contributed to the Second Boer War. In modern casual use it simply means a foreign newcomer.
The old-timers at the bar eyed him a bit suspiciously at first — he had that auslander look about him, like he'd just arrived from somewhere very different.
