Blunt and irreverent US military slang for a medic or medical officer, particularly one associated with treating sexually transmitted infections in the ranks. A chancre is a sore associated with syphilis, and mechanics fix things — so the medic 'fixes' the afflicted soldiers. Like much military slang, it blends dark humour with pragmatism, stripping away any dignity from both the role and the condition while preserving a grudging acknowledgment that the job needs doing.
When half the platoon came back from leave sick, they lined up outside the chancre mechanic's tent before dawn.
