Cocopan is a South African term for a small, open-topped mine cart used to transport ore, rock, or materials in underground or surface mining operations. The word is derived from an Afrikaans adaptation of a Dutch or possibly Malay term. Cocopans run on narrow-gauge rails in mines and are a familiar piece of equipment in South African gold and coal mining. The term is specific to Southern African mining vocabulary and carries strong associations with the historical mining industry of the Witwatersrand.
The miners pushed the loaded cocopan along the rails to the shaft bottom, working in near silence.
