An Indian Hindi/Urdu word for a dacoit — a member of an armed gang of robbers, a bandit. Dacoity (armed gang robbery) was a recognized crime category under British colonial Indian law and remains a separate offence under Indian law today. 'Daaku' is the more informal, colloquial form and appears widely in Bollywood films and popular culture as the archetypal villain or outlaw figure.
The daaku had been terrorizing the village roads for months before the police caught up with the gang.
