19th-century British cant and Cockney slang for a shilling (one-twentieth of a pound). Likely derived from the Latin 'denarius', a Roman silver coin. Used by street traders, market vendors, and the criminal underworld. After decimalisation in 1971 the word lost its practical referent entirely.
"That'll cost you a deaner, mate," the coster called out from behind his barrow.
