A rare small native tree of New Zealand (Pennantia corymbosa) found in forest understories. Kaikomako holds deep cultural significance in Maori tradition — it is said to be the tree from which the demigod Maui first rubbed fire. The wood was traditionally used for fire-making by friction. The tree is now the subject of conservation efforts given its scarcity in the wild.
The guided walk led through a grove where a single kaikomako still stood among the regenerating bush.
