From Irish 'loichín', a diminutive of 'loch'. Used in Irish English to describe the small, often reedy lakes scattered across bogland and drumlin country in the midlands and west of Ireland — too modest to be called a lough on a map but large enough to matter locally.
They fished the lougheen behind the hill every summer and always came back with a bucket of perch.
