now that I've had some results back and my new camera has a working light meter i think i can take much better photos using my own judgement to adjust after metering
ohhh that makes so much sense!! i was using an app for my metering at the time so it was probably metering for how bright the light in the photos was and telling me to use a higher shutter speed as a result
