US educational term for a student in the ninth grade, typically 14 to 15 years old and in their first year of high school. The term is standard in North American usage. Outside North America the grade system differs, making the term regionally specific. In popular culture ninth graders occupy an awkward position as the newest and lowest-status students in high school.
She was a ninth grader when she made the varsity track team, which almost never happens.
