An eastern US dialectal name for the menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) — a small, oily schooling fish abundant along the Atlantic coast and enormously important for commercial fishing and as bait. Menhaden are a key species in the Atlantic ecosystem. 'Pogy' is the standard informal name in New England and Mid-Atlantic fishing communities.
The lobstermen used pogy as bait in their traps; you could smell it coming from half a mile away.
