A colloquial catch-all label for any of several reddish-colored ant species, most commonly fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) in the American South, or red wood ants in British contexts. Not a precise taxonomic term — in practice, any ant that bites or stings painfully may get called a red ant. Fire ants in particular are notorious for aggressive swarming and a burning sting.
I stepped right into a red ant mound and had welts on my ankles for a week.
