The term is used in American street slang and has entered wider usage. More broadly, 'boosting' something can also mean promoting or elevating it, though in criminal slang the theft sense is primary.
Playing on someone else's competitive account to raise their rank, typically for money. Boosting is banned by most games and causes long-term ranked-ladder damage. On Twitch, 'boosting' is also used innocently to mean 'carrying a friend up the ladder' or 'giving a sub a Discord nitro boost', so context matters.
