A lifestyle of reconsidering your relationship with alcohol — not necessarily committing to sobriety, but questioning drinking culture. Drove the mocktail and non-alcoholic beer boom.

See it in action
  • “Julia Robinson for NPR The "sober curious" or "sober sometimes" movement started as a challenge for those who felt they'd partied a little too hard over New Year's weekend.”

  • “For the sober curious or those simply looking to cut back, this episode explores the wide world of mocktails and NA drinks, and what mindful drinking actually looks like.”

"Sober curious this year. Third Dry January."
Origin: Coined by Ruby Warrington in her 2018 book of the same title.
For parents

Sober curious is a movement of people exploring drinking less or not at all without committing to full sobriety. Not concerning, often a healthy practice. If your kid uses it constantly, ask them where they first heard it, not to police their speech but to understand which online community they are in. Most slang of this kind moves through TikTok and group chats, so seeing it in your child's vocabulary just means they are plugged into normal teen internet culture.

For ESL learners

Sober curious is informal wellness vocabulary describing a lifestyle of reduced or zero alcohol consumption motivated by curiosity rather than addiction recovery. Use in wellness and health writing. Formal equivalent: "alcohol-curious abstinence." Common non-native mistake: equating with full sobriety or addiction recovery. Sober curious people are typically not addicts; they are experimenting with cutting back. Read or listen to the word in context several times before trying it yourself; the right register is harder to learn than the dictionary meaning.

Dry January graduated into "sober curious" as a year-round identity, aided by the non-alcoholic beer and mocktail boom (Athletic Brewing, Ghia, Seedlip). Bars started adding zero-proof sections. Questioning drinking no longer requires quitting it.

"Sober curious since August. Haven't decided long-term. Life is already better."

Why is this section here?

Slang is read by different audiences for very different reasons. The For parents view re-explains the term in plain, non-judgemental language so a caregiver can understand what their child means without needing the surrounding subculture. The For English learners view focuses on register (when it's safe to use), formal alternatives, and common mistakes — what a textbook won't teach you.
