Transition years is Irish colloquial shorthand for students undertaking Transition Year — an optional year in the Irish secondary school system between Junior Cert and Leaving Cert. The year is designed to let students explore interests and develop skills outside exam pressure. 'Transition years' in casual speech refers to the student cohort as a group. The tone can be affectionate or slightly dismissive depending on speaker; older students sometimes regard the year as a doss.
