A yardman is a worker assigned to a yard — a rail yard, lumber yard, or ship yard. The term is practical and workmanlike: this is the person keeping things moving, sorting stock, shunting wagons, or loading timber. In Caribbean and African American vernacular it can also simply refer to a man who works outside or maintains outdoor property.
The yardman had the whole lumber yard sorted by grade before noon.
