An old, now obsolete slang word for the buttocks or rear end. It has a certain ridiculous, almost Victorian charm — the kind of silly-sounding word that makes you wonder how anyone kept a straight face saying it. 'Bumfiddle' has faded into historical curiosity, occasionally surfacing in discussions of archaic English slang or period literature. If 'bum' on its own was too blunt, apparently adding 'fiddle' made it more acceptable in polite company.
The old comedy pamphlet had an entire section of jokes involving bumfiddles and similar parts of the anatomy that the publisher deemed too vulgar for the main text.
