An Appalachian dialectal adjective describing something or someone that looks worn down, shabby, or fallen into poor condition — the kind of tired, threadbare appearance that tells a story of hard times. A downgone house has peeling paint and a sagging porch; a downgone person looks like life has been using them hard. The word carries no malice, just honest observation about decline.
