If you were on your high school or college speech and debate team, you almost certainly knew at least one extemper: highly informed, perpetually reading news, and able to spin a coherent argument out of almost any current event with frightening speed. A badge of honor in competitive speech circles.
She was the best extemper on the team — she'd prep for five minutes and then speak for seven like she'd been ready all along.
