A versatile informal shortening of 'preparation' that turns up in almost every context — meal prep, game-day prep, pre-surgery prep, you name it. Prep can also refer to a prep school (a private school that prepares students for elite universities) or, in horse racing, a warm-up race or workout before a major event. As a verb it's equally handy: you prep ingredients, prep a patient, or prep for an interview. The word strips away formality and just gets on with it.
She spent Sunday afternoon doing her meal prep so the weekdays wouldn't be a chaotic scramble.
