Hindi बेटा — literally "son", but in everyday South Asian English used as an affectionate term of address from an older person to a younger one regardless of gender. Parents address daughters as beta as readily as sons; aunties, teachers and shopkeepers use it for any child in their care. Carries warmth and a slight note of authority — the speaker is positioning themselves as elder and protector. Also used between equals, especially in playful or mock-parental tones ("beta, don't do this to yourself"). One of the gentlest words in the desi address system.
