US slang for a petrol station attendant — someone who pumps petrol, checks oil, and cleans windscreens at a filling station. Common in the era of full-service petrol stations, which were standard in America through much of the 20th century. The jockey suffix, as in disc jockey, suggests someone who operates or handles something with skill.
His first job was as a gas jockey at the Texaco on Route 9 for two summers.
