The Okarito brown kiwi (Apteryx rowi), the rarest species of kiwi bird, found only in a small area of Westland on the South Island of New Zealand. The name comes from Te Reo Maori. The rowi is critically endangered and is the focus of intensive conservation efforts.
The sanctuary breeds rowi in captivity before releasing the chicks into protected habitat.
