Scrieve has two distinct lives. In Scottish dialect it means to glide or move swiftly and smoothly, describing the kind of effortless movement that looks almost frictionless — a stone skimming across ice, a boat cutting through calm water. In shipbuilding, a scrieve (or scrive) is the full-scale design drawing scratched or chalked directly onto a scrieve board, from which craftsmen take measurements to build a ship. Both meanings share a sense of precision and smooth flow.
