Operating under the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Secret Intelligence Service collects intelligence abroad to support national security. In popular culture, it's become shorthand for suave spycraft — think James Bond's employer — though the real organization is considerably more bureaucratic and secretive than any Hollywood portrayal.
The novel's protagonist is recruited by the Secret Intelligence Service after his cover as a diplomat is blown.
