An Australian obsolete slang term for sideburns — the strips of facial hair grown along the sides of the face. The 'lever' element possibly refers to the way sideburns project from the side of the face, or may be a humorous mechanical metaphor. Largely replaced by 'sideburns' and 'mutton chops' in modern usage.
The old photograph showed him with impressive side-levers running down to his jaw.
