A South African term for any of several venomous snakes of the genus Psammophylax, found across southern Africa. The name translates literally from Afrikaans as 'sheep stabber' or 'sheep stinger', reflecting a belief that these snakes posed a danger to livestock. The skaapsteker is mildly venomous and mostly poses little threat to humans.
