Bashful Billy

An archaic Anglo-Indian slang term for the slow loris, a small nocturnal primate found in South and Southeast Asia. The name reflects the animal's characteristically slow, deliberate movements and its tendency to freeze when disturbed — behaviours that early British observers interpreted as shyness or bashfulness. The term belongs to the historical vocabulary of British colonial India. The slow loris is today recognised as an endangered and illegally trafficked species; the term itself has no modern circulation.
