In British English, scrambles was the original name for what the world now calls motocross — off-road motorcycle racing over rough, muddy terrain. The name perfectly captures the chaotic, engine-roaring scramble through dirt and obstacles. Though the term has largely been replaced, old-school riders and motorsport historians still use it with a certain nostalgic pride.
