The construction reuses "revert" in its older Latinate sense of "turn back" (here, "turn back with an answer") rather than the modern English sense of "return to a previous state". British and American recipients sometimes read "please revert" as "please undo the change" and reply in confusion — one of the most-cited examples of Indian English causing genuine cross-cultural friction in workplace writing.
