The max number of requests you can send an API in a given window. Hitting it returns a 429; every developer has hit one; OpenAI's 429s are the stuff of 2am Slack threads.

Rate limit is tech jargon for a cap on how often an app or user can do something ("you've been rate-limited; try again later"). If your kid mentions it they are likely using a developer tool or API. Not concerning. Increasingly common because of AI tools. If your kid uses it constantly, ask them where they first heard it, not to police their speech but to understand which online community they are in.
