Irish exclamation of grief or distress, a corruption of 'A Muire is trua' (O Mary, it is a pity). Used in 18th–19th century Irish and Anglo-Irish literature as a lament, typically in moments of bad news or tragedy. Conveys theatrical wailing more than sincere prayer; closest in register to 'woe is me.'
'Wirrasthru!' she cried when she heard the news, throwing her apron over her face.
