Definitions
Anorak mode is the state of being fully locked into your niche obsession — tabs open, notes accumulating, completely unreachable to the outside world. You've gone so deep into your specialist subject that normal conversation is impossible and frankly unwelcome. Time stops, hunger is ignored, and three hours disappear into researching the livery history of a specific British Rail diesel class. Anorak mode isn't a choice so much as an inevitability — it's what happens when the interest takes over. Friends and family learn to recognise the signs and know not to disturb you until it passes (or until dinner is ready twice).
Don't text him tonight — he's in full anorak mode, deep into Cold War aviation databases.

- anorakish80%
(British, informal) Obsessively absorbed in a subject, especially an unusual or obscure subject.
- anorak arc78%
An anorak arc is the character development — usually visible to everyone except the person experiencing it — where someone gradually becomes a full-blown niche obsessive. It starts innocently: a passing interest in vintage cameras, a single Wikipedia page about canal boats, one YouTube video about rare coins. Then the subscriptions multiply, the specialist books arrive, the vocabulary shifts, and before anyone can stage an intervention, the arc is complete. Friends watch it happen in real time, helpless and mildly entertained. The anorak arc is inevitable for certain personality types; the only question is which subject will claim them.
- anorak78%
(UK, slang) A person with an unusual or obsessive interest in a niche subject, especially trains.
- anorak check77%
An anorak check is a moment when someone pauses to acknowledge — or gets called out for — going full obsessive nerd mode. Borrowed from the format of 'vibe check' and 'nerd check', it functions as a lighthearted audit: are you currently deep in a Wikipedia rabbit hole about train timetables? Are you reciting bus route facts nobody asked for? Anorak check. It can be self-applied (a person catching themselves mid-lecture) or aimed at a friend who's clearly gone too deep on their niche interest. The check isn't necessarily a diss — anoraks often wear the label as a badge of honour.
- anorak core76%
Anorak core is the aesthetic of unashamed niche enthusiasm — the visual language of cardigans, overstuffed bookshelves, handwritten index cards, well-worn technical manuals, and cups of tea going cold because you got distracted reading about locomotive classifications. It's not performative nerdiness or geek chic trying to be cool; it's the genuine article, with all the specific, slightly chaotic warmth that implies. Anorak core spaces feel lived-in by someone who cares deeply about something that most people don't know exists. It's cosy, cerebral, and entirely comfortable with itself — which is, ironically, making it very appealing online.
