A butty fail is a sandwich attempt gone catastrophically wrong in one of several specific and deeply annoying ways — the bread is too thick, the filling slides out the moment you pick it up, the whole thing disintegrates into your lap, or worst of all, someone substituted the correct filling for something that had no business being between those slices. The stakes feel disproportionately high given the simplicity of the task, which is part of what makes a butty fail so demoralizing. In British food culture, where the butty is sacred comfort, getting it wrong is a minor but genuine tragedy.
