cigarette check

A casual check-in directed at someone you address as cuz — a term of familiar address used widely in Black American slang and spread through hip-hop culture. Dropping a cuz check is the conversational equivalent of a well-being ping: you are establishing contact, seeing what is good, and affirming the relationship with the address itself. The cuz check can be a text, a DM, or a shoutout — what matters is the warmth baked into the acknowledgment. It signals genuine closeness rather than transactional communication.

A bet check is the verbal or textual nudge you give someone to confirm they're still on board — a lightweight pulse-check using slang's most casual agreement word. If 'bet' is the handshake, a bet check is asking if the handshake is still in effect. It's used when plans are loose, commitments were made over text at 2am, or you genuinely need to know whether 'bet' meant 'yes I'll be there' or 'sounds good, I'll probably flake.' One small phrase that does a lot of social maintenance work.

A casual verbal or mental confirmation that things are acceptable — not great, not terrible, just passing the basic bar. An aight check is the low-stakes audit of any situation, vibe, or plan where the only standard being applied is 'does this clear the minimum?'. You run an aight check before showing up to something you're not fully hyped about, or after a mediocre interaction where you need to confirm nobody's hurt and nobody's thriving.

A quick vibe assessment to determine just how baked someone actually is — or how baked you yourself have gotten without realizing it. A bake check usually involves a simple test: a joke, a math question, trying to remember what you were just talking about. It can also refer to the mutual check-in that happens in a smoke session when everyone pauses to gauge where the group is at before deciding whether to keep going or call it. Necessary, often hilarious, and frequently the moment someone realizes they went way further than intended.

A moment — often prompted by a friend, a caption, or a crisis — where you pause and deliberately audit your own mental and emotional state instead of spiraling deeper into the chaos. A mindfulness check isn't necessarily a full meditation session; it's the quick internal inventory: Am I okay? Am I reacting or responding? Have I eaten water and drunk food today? The term lives at the intersection of therapy-speak and group chat culture, often deployed when someone is clearly in their feelings and needs a gentle redirect back to the present moment before they send that text.
