Dried plum is the marketing-friendly American rebranding of the prune — same fruit, much better PR. In the early 2000s, the California Prune Board officially rebranded to the California Dried Plum Board and pushed 'dried plum' as the preferred term because 'prune' had developed unflattering associations (old people, digestive issues). The rebrand was partly successful: you'll now find both names on packaging and menus. The fruit didn't change — just the vibes.
The label said 'dried plum' but everyone at the table knew it was just a prune in a nicer outfit.
