Someone who systematically manipulates another person into questioning their own memory, perception, and sanity. A gaslighter doesn't argue with facts — they erase them, reframe them, or act like you invented them. They're the 'that never happened' person, the 'you're too sensitive' person, the 'everyone agrees with me' person. Gaslighters thrive on making you doubt yourself because your confusion is their control. Whether in relationships, at work, or online, spotting a gaslighter is step one of not losing your mind.

The state someone enters when they fully commit to rewriting events, denying facts, and making the other person feel unhinged — usually as a defensive tactic when cornered. Gaslight mode isn't a personality; it's a gear shift. Someone in gaslight mode will claim conversations never happened, flip the script to make you the aggressor, and produce an alternative version of events so confidently you start to waver. Recognising when someone has switched into gaslight mode is the only way to avoid getting completely lost in their version of reality.

The particular atmospheric charge someone brings to a conversation where you can feel reality beginning to shift before they've even said anything directly manipulative. Gaslight energy is that sense that whatever happened is about to be reframed, that your account is about to be questioned, that somehow this is going to end with you apologising. People clock gaslight energy in the sigh before the explanation, the loaded 'I mean...', the very calm and very wrong recounting of something that definitely didn't happen that way.
