holy based

(Internet slang) approval]] of someone's actions or views.

(Internet slang) The quality of being based .

Agreeing with something strongly because it's bold, authentic, or unafraid to be unpopular. The opposite of "cringe." "Quitting Twitter to read books again — based." Rapper Lil B redefined the word (previously slang for cocaine) in the early 2010s as a term for being yourself.

Based at a frenetic, overwhelming intensity — hyper based describes someone whose authentic self-expression is not just bold but relentless, firing off genuine opinions and unfiltered takes faster than social norms can catch up. Where based is a state and mega based is a magnitude, hyper based is a tempo: everything happening at once, no filtering, no social latency between thought and expression. Admired for its energy, occasionally exhausting to witness.

When someone attempts to be based — authentic, fearless, unapologetic — but fumbles it so thoroughly that the attempt itself becomes the joke. A based fail happens when the independence reads as ignorance, the hot take turns out to be simply wrong, or the refusal to care about optics results in an outcome that clearly required caring about optics. It's the gap between the aspiration to based energy and the reality of what came out. Documented and shared lovingly by witnesses.
