Borrowed from narrative storytelling, an adult arc is the phase in someone's life where they visibly grow into maturity — getting their finances straight, leaving toxic situations, developing routines, and generally becoming a more functional human. Unlike a full character arc in fiction, an adult arc is ongoing and messy, and people usually announce they're in one while they're still figuring it out. It implies growth is happening even if it's not linear, and online it's often used to celebrate or document the transition from chaos to something resembling stability.

A period of intense personal transformation or escalation — a mad arc is when someone's story gets turned up to maximum drama or growth in a short span. In NYC slang, a mad arc is the trajectory of someone who went through a lot, changed significantly, and emerged different: relationships, career pivots, neighborhoods, whole personalities. It's the story you tell in retrospect. 'I went on a whole mad arc after I left that job.' It can be positive or chaotic or both, because in New York most arcs are both.

A manifest arc is the narrative someone constructs around their manifestation journey — framing their life as a story with a beginning (wanting something badly), a middle (doing the inner work), and an impending triumphant end (receiving it). Borrowed from storytelling terminology, it lets people present their goals as destiny unfolding rather than luck or labor. Heavy on TikTok 'storytime' energy, where creators narrate their manifestation process in episodes. Believing in your arc is half the point.
