The workplace pattern in which an employee is steadily handed more responsibility — bigger projects, direct reports, the work of a colleague who quit — without the matching change in title, pay or formal recognition. Coined as the mirror image of "quiet firing" and "quiet quitting", the phrase went viral in 2022–23 as workers compared notes on LinkedIn and TikTok about being praised as "indispensable" while their compensation stayed flat. Quiet promotion is treated as a soft form of exploitation, particularly common in understaffed teams where managers rely on high performers to absorb work that should justify a new headcount.
