A bad player, usually one who blames the game or "cheap" tactics instead of their own skill. Slightly less harsh than "noob." Codified by David Sirlin's 1999 essay "Playing to Win": a scrub is someone who plays by imagined rules and complains when others don't.

"Got beat once and called my strategy cheap. Classic scrub."
Origin: Fighting-game community since at least the 1990s (David Sirlin's essay "Playing to Win" codified the meaning).
For parents

Scrub in gaming or casual slang means a bad or unskilled player. Originated in fighting games. Not concerning, just gamer vocabulary. If your kid uses it constantly, ask them where they first heard it, not to police their speech but to understand which online community they are in. Most slang of this kind moves through TikTok and group chats, so seeing it in your child's vocabulary just means they are plugged into normal teen internet culture.

For ESL learners

Scrub in gaming and casual slang is informal for an unskilled or amateurish player, often with mild contempt. Use in casual gaming contexts. Formal equivalents: "a novice player," "a poor performer." Common non-native mistake: confusing with standard senses of scrub (clean, exfoliate, surgical garment). In gaming the meaning is performance-based and slightly derogatory. Read or listen to the word in context several times before trying it yourself; the right register is harder to learn than the dictionary meaning.

In gaming: a beginner who plays badly but acts entitled. Pejorative. Distinct from "noob" (just inexperienced) — a scrub is bad AND won't admit it.

"Don't be a scrub, learn the basics."
Origin: Fighting game community vocabulary; popularized by David Sirlin's essay "Playing to Win" (2006).

Why is this section here?

Slang is read by different audiences for very different reasons. The For parents view re-explains the term in plain, non-judgemental language so a caregiver can understand what their child means without needing the surrounding subculture. The For English learners view focuses on register (when it's safe to use), formal alternatives, and common mistakes — what a textbook won't teach you.
