A bad player, usually one who blames the game or "cheap" tactics instead of their own skill. Slightly less harsh than "noob." Codified by David Sirlin's 1999 essay "Playing to Win": a scrub is someone who plays by imagined rules and complains when others don't.
In gaming: a beginner who plays badly but acts entitled. Pejorative. Distinct from "noob" (just inexperienced) — a scrub is bad AND won't admit it.
A low key scrub is someone who doesn't broadcast their scrub status — they appear functional, maybe even put-together, but beneath the surface they're quietly borrowing, avoiding effort, and coasting on others' goodwill. The low key prefix is key: this person won't show up to your house in sweats asking for money. They're subtle about it. They volunteer for things they never follow through on, 'forget' to Venmo you back, and gradually reveal themselves over time. Possibly the most dangerous breed of scrub because you don't clock them until it's too late.
Scrub maxxing is the act of fully committing to being a scrub — not accidentally or through laziness, but with a deliberate, almost philosophical dedication to doing the least. Think: skipping the gym, begging for rides, replying to texts three days late, and wearing the same sweatpants for a week with zero regret. It takes the -maxxing framework (maximize a trait to its logical extreme) and applies it to the archetype of the classic scrub. Beloved ironically by people who are too online to actually be scrubs but enjoy the fantasy.
