A situationship arc has all the beats of a love story but never quite the resolution, and people discuss their own arcs online with the same dramatic gravity usually reserved for TV character development. The arc framing acknowledges that these non-relationships have a real story worth telling.

The state of being fully locked in on a romantic pairing — every interaction between two people is being analyzed through the lens of the ship, every ambiguous moment is evidence, and the imagination is running a full production of the relationship you are convinced should happen. Ship mode is not passive fandom appreciation; it is active, obsessive, possibly unhinged in the best way. Once you enter ship mode, neutral viewing is over.
