Definitions
The stretch of weeks leading up to and including Carnival — typically January through Mardi Gras — when soca music floods every airwave, playlist, and fete in the Caribbean and diaspora. Soca szn is characterized by new releases dropping daily, costume fever, road test parties, and a collective understanding that productivity is optional. For Trinidadians especially it functions almost like a different calendar year entirely, one measured in jouvert mornings and road marches.
My credit card statement looks insane but soca szn only comes once a year and you can't put a price on those memories.

- soca77%
Trinidad-born dance music — soul of calypso — with fast, driving rhythms that dominate Caribbean carnivals. Machel Montano and Destra Garcia are genre figureheads. 2024 saw multiple soca crossovers into US/UK pop charts.
- soca70%
A genre of music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 1970s and developed into a range of styles during the 1980s and after which primarily includes influences of African and Indian rhythms.
- soca mode69%
The mental and physical state you enter when soca music takes full control of your body and inhibitions — hips moving independently from your brain, stress evaporating, and every problem shrinking to background noise. Soca mode isn't a mood you choose; it chooses you the moment the bass drops and the brass kicks in. Once activated it's nearly impossible to deactivate until the song ends, and by then another one has already started.
- peak soca69%
Soca music or culture at its absolute highest point — the songs, the performances, the fetes, and the vibes that represent the genre firing on every cylinder simultaneously. Peak soca is often debated generationally: for some it's the 1980s Sparrow era, for others it's the 2000s when Machel went international, for others it's whatever dropped last Carnival season. The debate itself is part of the culture.
- soca king67%
The undisputed ruler of the soca dancefloor or studio — the performer, DJ, or reveler whose energy single-handedly carries a fete from warm to wildfire. Soca king status isn't self-appointed; it's earned through consistent road-march bangers, crowd command, and an almost supernatural ability to make every whine feel like a communion. In Trinidad and Tobago, the title carries real weight during Carnival season when competition for the crown is fierce and the stakes are national pride.
