A word that earns its keep in two very different contexts. Literally, spangled means decorated with small glittering ornaments or sequins — hence 'star-spangled.' In British slang, however, spangled means thoroughly drunk or high — dazzled by substances rather than sequins. The slang sense plays on the idea of being bedazzled or dazzled into a stupor, and it's used with the same casual fondness that British speakers bring to most drunk-synonyms.
