arey mode

The distinctive vibe of someone who reacts to everything with maximum expressive force — shock, exasperation, delight, or disbelief all delivered at the same high volume and with the same theatrical flair. Arey energy is that quality of making every situation feel more alive and slightly more chaotic through sheer force of personality and reaction. People with arey energy can't hear a piece of gossip without physically grabbing someone, can't watch a movie without narrating their feelings, and cannot possibly keep their opinions quiet. It's exhausting and completely magnetic.

Hindi/Urdu exclamation: "hey!" or "wait!" Expresses surprise, mild protest, or getting someone's attention. "Arey, what are you doing?" Works across South Asian languages and has entered Indian English as a complete utterance on its own.

A multipurpose exclamation expressing surprise, emphasis, mild reproach or affectionate exasperation. From Hindi अरे, also written 'arrey' or 'are'. Often doubled or tripled for stronger effect ("arre arre arre!" to flag escalating disbelief). In South Asian English speech and code-switched chat it functions like "hey", "oh come on" or "good grief" depending entirely on tone. Comfortable at the start of a sentence ("Arre, you came!") or as a standalone reaction. One of the most recognisable particles of Hindi-English code-switching and instantly read as "this speaker is desi".

(India) Expressing surprise or alarm; hey.

The state of being fully switched into an agitated, confrontational headspace — not just a bit annoyed, but locked in and ready to argue about everything. When someone's in aggy mode, rational conversation is probably off the table until they decompress. It's a recognizable mental gear shift, often triggered by stress, disrespect, or a series of small irritations stacking up. Friends learn to read the signs and either give space or fan the flames, depending on the kind of friends they are.
