doomscrolling core

Compulsively scrolling bad news even though it's making you feel worse. A specifically post-2020 hobby — pandemic onset, political anxiety, climate dread, all algorithmically served at 2am. Oxford shortlisted it as Word of the Year 2020.

The full-immersion state of compulsive negative-news consumption where you've stopped doing anything else and surrendered entirely to the scroll. Doomscrolling mode isn't casual browsing — it's the dissociative headspace where time melts, phone brightness goes up, and you're refreshing the same apps for updates that haven't changed anything except your anxiety level. The hallmark is awareness that you should stop combined with an inability to do so.

Compulsively scrolling through bad news despite the negative effect on mood. The pandemic era made the term ubiquitous.

Fully conditioned into a doomscrolling worldview — someone who has spent so much time consuming catastrophic content that it's become their baseline lens on reality. Being doomscrolling pilled means the news cycle is always running in the background, you reflexively check for updates during quiet moments, and optimism feels naive. It's not just a habit; it's an ideology of perpetual low-grade dread that the algorithm helped install.

Any period — usually election cycles, geopolitical crises, or late-night news spirals — when doomscrolling reaches collective, near-universal levels. Doomscrolling szn is both a diagnosis and a resigned acknowledgment: everyone online is doing it, the content is relentless, and the algorithms have fully optimized for keeping you in the feed. Declaring doomscrolling szn is a way of naming the cultural mood and perhaps finding dark solidarity in shared digital suffering.
