Definitions
Any period — usually election cycles, geopolitical crises, or late-night news spirals — when doomscrolling reaches collective, near-universal levels. Doomscrolling szn is both a diagnosis and a resigned acknowledgment: everyone online is doing it, the content is relentless, and the algorithms have fully optimized for keeping you in the feed. Declaring doomscrolling szn is a way of naming the cultural mood and perhaps finding dark solidarity in shared digital suffering.
With everything happening right now it is absolutely doomscrolling szn — my screen time report is embarrassing.

- peak doomscrolling79%
The apex of a doomscrolling spiral — the point where the content has gotten so bad, the session so long, and the anxiety so fully engaged that you've reached a kind of terrible completion. Peak doomscrolling is recognizable: it's 2am, you've gone from a minor news item to a six-thread geopolitical deep dive, and you feel profoundly informed and deeply unwell simultaneously. It's also used to describe entire eras when collective doom consumption reaches a historical extreme.
- doomscrolling76%
Compulsively scrolling bad news even though it's making you feel worse. A specifically post-2020 hobby — pandemic onset, political anxiety, climate dread, all algorithmically served at 2am. Oxford shortlisted it as Word of the Year 2020.
- doomscrolling mode75%
The full-immersion state of compulsive negative-news consumption where you've stopped doing anything else and surrendered entirely to the scroll. Doomscrolling mode isn't casual browsing — it's the dissociative headspace where time melts, phone brightness goes up, and you're refreshing the same apps for updates that haven't changed anything except your anxiety level. The hallmark is awareness that you should stop combined with an inability to do so.
- doomscrolling74%
Compulsively scrolling through bad news despite the negative effect on mood. The pandemic era made the term ubiquitous.
- doomscrolling core74%
The aesthetic and cultural identity built around doomscrolling as a defining trait — dark humor about current events, terminally online energy, bleak meme vocabulary, and a personality organized around catastrophic news consumption. Doomscrolling core is what happens when compulsive news anxiety becomes a whole personality and community: you find each other in the comments at 2am, bonding over shared horror at whatever just dropped in the feed.
