Definitions
When something — or someone — doesn't just disappoint but spectacularly bombs the most basic quality checks. Lifted directly from AI development, where an 'evals fail' means a model flunked its benchmark tests, the phrase migrated into casual internet use to roast anything that seemed promising but delivered nothing. An evals fail isn't just bad — it's measurably, demonstrably bad, with receipts. The term adds an air of clinical disappointment, as if the subject was tested under controlled conditions and still couldn't perform.
That movie was a full evals fail — the trailer set the bar at zero and it still went under.

- eval fail77%
When someone's judgment call turns out to be spectacularly wrong — the rating, the read, the prediction — all of it collapses under reality. An eval fail isn't just being wrong; it's being confidently, publicly wrong after presenting yourself as someone who could accurately assess a situation. The bigger the posted take, the more satisfying the eval fail becomes for everyone watching. Social media thrives on documenting these.
- ideation fail66%
A concept so far off-base, unresearched, or painfully obvious that it deflates the entire brainstorm session. An ideation fail isn't just a bad idea — it's an idea that actively wastes the room's energy, prompting awkward silence or the polite nod that says 'we're moving on.' The term covers everything from the startup idea that already exists (and failed) to the 'disruptive' concept that's just a bus with extra steps. Creative teams use it to name what everyone's thinking without making it personal.
- hella fail65%
A spectacularly public, undeniable disaster — not just a regular failure but one so bad it deserves its own announcement. A hella fail is the kind of screw-up that gets screenshotted, shared in group chats, and revisited months later. It's used to call out moments where someone swung and missed so hard that no one can pretend otherwise. The 'hella' doesn't soften it — it amplifies the embarrassment and makes sure everyone knows the magnitude of what just happened.
- bare fail64%
A bare fail is when something goes wrong in the most obvious, unambiguous, undeniable way — no grey area, no almost-made-it energy, just a clean-cut failure with everyone watching. It's not a near miss or a bad day; it's a full, spectacular collapse that can't be spun into anything else. The word 'bare' amplifies the failure to its maximum, adding a layer of communal acknowledgement that yeah, that was bad.
- bussin fail64%
The brutal letdown when something that was supposed to be absolutely incredible turns out to be deeply mediocre or outright bad. A bussin fail is a special category of disappointment — the higher the hype, the harder the crash. You drove across town, paid the premium price, waited in the long line, and somehow it still missed. It's not just bad food; it's the collapse of an expectation that someone else built too high. The betrayal hits different when bussin was promised.
