gatekeep king

A gatekeep god is someone who has elevated petty exclusivity into an art form — the ultimate arbiter of who's in and who's out, operating with such committed possessiveness that it almost wraps around to impressive. The title is equal parts roast and reluctant crown: yes, they're insufferable about their micro-niche, but their dedication to not letting anyone else have nice things is at least consistent. The gatekeep god doesn't just deny entry; they build a labyrinth and charge admission in obscure knowledge.

A gatekeeper is someone who controls — or thinks they control — who gets to belong to a fandom, scene, or subculture. They quiz newcomers on obscure trivia, dismiss casual fans as fake, and treat their personal taste as the entry requirement for loving something. On the internet, calling someone a gatekeeper is almost always an accusation: you're more interested in exclusivity than in the thing itself. A true gatekeeper has forgotten that the whole point of loving something is wanting more people to love it too.

An extreme, almost obsessive form of gatekeeping where someone expends massive energy controlling who gets access to something they love. Hyper gatekeep goes beyond protecting a niche — it's an exhausting full-time project involving loyalty tests, tiered access, and a carefully managed information blackout. The person doing it usually doesn't see the irony that their obsessive protection is itself a form of parasocial ownership over something that was never theirs to own.

The mental state someone enters when they've decided nobody new is getting into their world. Gatekeep mode isn't a permanent personality — it's a conscious switch you flip when your favorite thing starts going mainstream and you want to protect it. During gatekeep mode, you become selectively forgetful about band names, refuse to share restaurant recs, and mysteriously lose the ability to explain your niche hobby to curious newcomers.

To limit another party's participation in a collective identity or an activity, usually due to undue pettiness, resentment, or overprotectiveness.
